Expert Advice on How to Become a Good Leader

expert-advice-on-how-to-become-a-good-leaderFinding ways to motivate yourself and your team is the key to being a good leader. This leadership skill is often learned over time. However, if you are an ambitious person you may want to accelerate this process.

Leadership training experts say working on these four things will keep you on the right track to developing the skills that successful leaders need.

1. Know Yourself & Your Leadership Abilities

A true self-assessment of your own leadership abilities can be difficult, so lean on mentors, fellow professionals, and even your own staff to help evaluate your effectiveness. Tony Robbins, an author and life coach, believes that “as a leader, you should look inward and focus on your own abilities and shortcomings, and ask yourself how you can find ways to empower and inspire your team.” He explains that “strong knowledge of your innate gifts and abilities means you can put them to work for you, while an understanding of your weaknesses provides you with areas you know you can improve. Addressing your shortcomings leads to true growth.”

2. Connect & Communicate

Unlike managers, leaders focus on building strong connections with their team. It is important to clearly communicate goals and your vision for the future. Terry “Starbucker” St. Marie, a leadership writer and consultant, urges leaders to be “more human.” He suggests that “building a real personal connection with your teammates is vital to developing the shared trust necessary to build a strong culture of accountability and exceptional performance.” If you can get that kind of culture in place, St. Marie believes “the team can achieve a successful business, a happy team and a fulfilled leader.”

3. Do Not Motivate, Inspire

Inspiring someone is permanent, whereas motivation can be temporary. Samuel Mattioli, Dale Carnegie Master Trainer, explains that “in today’s business environment, meeting each and every person where they are and truly knowing their desires is the first step to becoming an inspiring leader. This approach works with every generation because it is a humanistic quality that is genuine.” In his work as a leadership trainer at Dale Carnegie of Orange County, he notices that “great leaders focus on others and put others first when leading teams.”

4. Invest in Leadership Training

“Ultimately, there’s one investment that supersedes all others: Invest in yourself,” says Warren Buffett, CEO of Berkshire Hathaway. “Nobody can take away what you’ve got in yourself, and everybody has potential they haven’t used yet.” He continues to explain that you can exponentially increase your potential “by simply being able to communicate better” and “enhancing your talents.”

Fun Fact: Dale Carnegie was actually a big component to Warren Buffet’s success as a leader. Buffet recently told Forbes that the best investment he ever made was the High Impact Presentations course from Dale Carnegie!
